My goal with every case statement, magazine, newsletter, or website I design is to tell an attention-grabbing story that moves readers.
Here’s what I don’t do: merely make each page pretty. I use images, type, and color to persuade your donors exactly the way a writer uses words. The seamless marriage of design to story makes your message twice as powerful. Whether you’re trying to win hearts, change minds, or form lasting connections, I can bring your stories to life.
As a second grader, I provided design direction on a logo for the high-tech start-up my father was working on in our basement. I didn’t know how to tell him the typography was terrible. Happily, his business was an international success. And over time I got a lot better at helping my clients understand how to communicate with design. I launched Andrea Hopkins Design to focus my attention on nonprofits — to help them reach their supporters with communications that are as powerful as the work their organizations are doing.
Prior to starting AHD I was an art director, designer, and technical illustrator at agencies in New York and Connecticut. My work for nonprofits includes Yale University, USA for UNHCR, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital–Stanford, Save The Elephants–Kenya, Yale New Haven Hospital, the Anchorage Museum, The Institute for Sustainable Philanthropy–UK, and the Nantucket Atheneum.
In the distant past, I spent two years living in a village in Guatemala where I fell in love with Native American textiles. Upon my return from Latin America I settled in northern California where for more than a decade I had a successful business selling my weavings in California, the Pacific northwest, Hawaii, and New York.
